Johnny Smythe was killed riding a bike 8/11

Johnny Smythe, my best friend and roommate was killed thurs the 11th as he was biking home. He was violently hit by a drunk driver on West 6th only 2 blocks from our apartment.
The driver took off and much later called 911 saying he "might of hit someone"
Austin drivers have to be more aware of cyclists.
They have as much right to be on the road as these gas guzzling Trucks and SUVs
You would think with the success of Lance Armstrong people would be more aware of bike riders. Johnny and I discussed the aggression and road rage Texans have against bikers, unlike much of the rest of the country. He rode in Austin's Critical Mass bike ride on several occasions and would help inform other riders of their legal rights.
Honestly I have ridden my bicycle in NYC and not encountered this type of aggression found on Austin's downtown roads.
Unfortunately, with Texas law, the driver that killed Johnny will not even have his license revoked due to it being his first offense.

Johnny's death is a tragedy, and I am still in a state of shock....he was a extremely close friend of mine for over 10 years....words cannot express my grief. It's so sad to have his family members show up at your doorstep, and tell you of your best friend's death...let alone sort thru all your roommate's belongings.
Please....be kind to bike riders and all who share this earth. And please do not drive drunk
I will be contacting the kids who run Austin's Critical Mass bike ride and the downtown bike carriage people who shuffle people up and down 6th St., right past the place where he was hit.
Any of their contact info would be greatly appreciated.
Johnny was on Tribe for awhile and was known throughout Austin's electronic music scene and will be missed dearly. He was a member of this tribe and posted "Snail Mittens" He worked as a Graphic Designer in NYC, SF and Austin

Local Electronic Musician, 3 CD Release, Check it out...

Hello Friends,

Over the past several months I endeavoured tirelessly to bring to fruition a triple CD release of various styles of experimental electronic music, each album has it's own unique style ranging from downtempo/ambeitn, to light melodic video game-ish breakbeats, and experimental, circuit bent weirdness etheric soundcollages...all are avbl. for free as my music always is @

www.aleph9.com

or to bring up the releases directly

www.aleph9.com/triplecdrelease.html

I appreciate anyone listening, offering feedback and the likes as I have no motives to making music besides sharing my experience and insights with anyone willing to listen whilst also finding a realm in which to voice myself, so I ask that if you enjoy the releases maybe pass along the link or a copy to friends who might enjoy it as well...anyway, I appreciate your time as always...

ACL Fest...coming in from Seattle but am seeking word on WILCO. and Karaoke

Came to the festival last year, hot, humid and totally awesome event. We were fortunate to get word that WILCO was playing at Stubb's the night before and I'm hoping that they will do so again. If any of you hear of that in advance, through the grapevine or whatever, could you please remember me in a reply? I would really appreciate it. I'd like to get advance tickets. Also, if you hear that Ryan Adams is coming back, that would be cool to know as well.

If you have any advice of how to get to the festival, shortcuts, things to remember to pack in with you, etc...this out of town girl would really appreciate it.

Karaoke: is there a place that is fun, doesn't take themselves too seriously, that has karoake 7 nights a week or, WED or THURS nights? I belong to a Karaoke tribe and need to report back on my adventures as well. Thanks to all and your city has very good vibes, and am eager to visit again.

Best Austin Cel Phone Service

Yo tribe!

Just moved to Austin from San Francisco, and I need to get a new celphone.. I was using AT&T before, but have heard mixed reviews.

I'm a pretty basic celphone user.. no frills. I do like a clamshell phone, but not necessary. I don't surf the internet on my phone...

What's the best plan to go with for the best price? I want to call my friends in SF as well.. so it should have good long distance/roaming etc.. thanks!

I've been searching full time for three weeks solid. I'm a Graphic Designer with Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Quark Xpress and a few other cards up my sleeve but I'm just not catching on anywhere. Anyone got a lead?

By the way, for a survival job I would take a job in retail I have experience in that too... so I could use those leads as well.

Online Advertising Jobs?

My wife and I are aggressively pursuing opportunities in Austin. The size of the city is large enough to find employees within the city but not large enough to have lots of specific jobs. As such, it is extremely difficult to find employment opportunities other those posted on major websites for companies like Dell.
I'm curious if anyone knows of good local recruiters or specific jobs in online advertising. Manager-Director level.

Thanks

Are You Willing To Pay For An Orkut Invite?

Are You Willing To Pay For An Orkut Invite?

By Rob Greenlee, Host WebTalkGuys Radio

Is an invitation to Orkut.com, the Google affiliated social networking site, worth $5 dollars?

It seems that the fever to be included in this exclusive invite only social club is heating up. So Orkut members are offering this invite on EBay for as much as $5 per invite.

The Orkut community is growing very fast and word is spreading. People want in faster than the invites are getting sent.

It is unclear at this stage how valuable membership in this community really is, but it is clear that all the big name Internet bloggers, technologists and technology journalists are already growing their network of contacts and friends. This network does seem to be reaching the very elite people online and is why people may be willing to pay to be invited.

One could look at this network as a form of a contact manager for your group of contacts and a way to stay up to date with what is new with your friends and business contacts.

I just received a notification from the namesake for the community, Orkut Buyukkokten, announcing to me the date of his birthday. I then sent him a birthday wish and invited him to join me on WebTalk soon to talk about Orkut.

I am an early member of Orkut and have set up a growing position in this community. You must be willing to share some personal information about yourself to really make connections with people of common interest. It does appear to be mostly a popularity game as your number of friends is used to rank your displayed place on friends lists as part of each members profile.

Many people have seen connections via Ryze and Friendster, LinkedIn and many others. If you look around on these sites, you'll see a lot of the same names and faces. I do think that Orkut has more appeal because of its invite policy, but how hard is it really to get an invitation? Surely almost everyone knows someone in there by now.

I think Orkut is great, but I signed up for several of the sub-communities and only one of them is really having any sort of conversation at all. Unless people start participating and stop lurking, the system won't be that useful for most people.

If you are interested in joining Orkut for free and listen to the WebTalk Radio show, then send me an email to robg@webtalkguys.com, along with a bit about yourself, and I will consider sending you an invitation.
